Bone Health
This collection covers bisphosphonates, hormone therapies and calcitonin salmon used for osteoporosis and other bone-remodelling conditions, including well-known names such as Fosamax, Actonel and Evista.
Key points
- Bisphosphonates slow down the rate at which bone is broken down and are widely used to treat osteoporosis.
- Bone density testing and fracture-risk assessment help set the context for an osteoporosis treatment plan.
- Other medicine families, alongside bisphosphonates, are also used for osteoporosis in defined circumstances.
Bisphosphonates, hormone therapies and calcitonin in this range
Fosamax (alendronic acid), Actonel (risedronate) and Didronel (etidronate) are bisphosphonates taken as tablets. They are listed for osteoporosis and, in some cases, other bone-remodelling conditions such as Paget’s Disease of Bone.
Raloxifene, the ingredient in Evista, and Calcitonin Salmon in Fortical add two further ingredient families listed for osteoporosis. Estrace and Premarin, built on Estradiol and conjugated oestrogens, carry a postmenopausal osteoporosis use alongside their main role in hormone therapy.
