Key points

  • Antiretroviral therapy is recommended for everyone living with HIV and combines medicines that block HIV at different stages of its life cycle.
  • Medicine classes, including NRTI and NNRTI, group HIV drugs by the stage or process they target.
  • Combination tablets place two or more antiretroviral ingredients in a single pill, as with Biktarvy’s three-ingredient formula.
  • Not every attached antiviral treats HIV: Famvir is listed here but is used for herpes zoster and related infections, not HIV-1.

What this range includes

Several tablets combine antiretroviral therapy into a combination regimen in a single pill: Biktarvy combines bictegravir, emtricitabine and tenofovir alafenamide, while Viraday and Trustiva combine efavirenz, Emtricitabine and Tenofovir Disoproxil. Viropil uses a different three-ingredient combination, pairing dolutegravir and lamivudine with tenofovir disoproxil. Other tablets carry a single active ingredient, among them Tivicay (dolutegravir), Sustiva (Efavirenz) and Epivir (lamivudine), or a two-ingredient pairing such as Combivir (lamivudine and zidovudine) and Tenvir-em (tenofovir disoproxil and emtricitabine). Tenvir-em’s attached indications also include Pre-exposure Prophylaxis, alongside its role in treating existing HIV-1 infection.
