Key points

  • Urgency incontinence is treated with two types of medicine: anticholinergics and beta-3 agonists.
  • Urinary retention treatment depends on whether it came on suddenly or has built up over time, and on the underlying cause.
  • Prostate enlargement can cause lower urinary tract symptoms that are treated with alpha blockers.
  • Urinary infections are treated with antibiotics and sit apart from the bladder control and retention medicines in this range.

Bladder control, retention and infection medicines

Anticholinergic tablets, including Ditropan, Vesicare and Detrol, and the beta-3 agonist Myrbetriq treat Overactive Bladder by acting on the bladder muscle in different ways. Sanctura XR is a capsule version of the same anticholinergic group. Urecholine sits apart in the retention group, attached to a bladder that has trouble emptying rather than one that empties too soon.

Where an enlarged prostate is behind the symptoms, Alfuzosin, found in Uroxatral, and Doxazosin tablets are the attached alpha blockers. Pyridium, Urispas and Elmiron cover bladder pain, spasm and discomfort instead, a different problem from incontinence.

Antibiotics form the last group and are unrelated to bladder control. Nitrofurantoin tablets and Baycip are listed directly for urinary tract infections, while Doxycycline capsules, sold as Vibramycin, and tablets such as Azee reach this category because they are also used for broader bacterial infections rather than a bladder specific one.
