Key points

  • NSAIDs reduce pain and inflammation together, and several different oral and topical ingredients fall into this one group.
  • Managing pain is often handled separately from treating whatever caused it, rather than as a single step.
  • Muscle relaxants, migraine medicines and local anaesthetics work through different routes to NSAIDs, so they are not simple substitutes for each other.

NSAIDs, corticosteroids and disease-modifying medicines

Celebrex, Mobic, Diclofenac tablets, Ponstel, Etodolac, Indocin, Voveran SR, Arcoxia, Feldene, Toradol, aceclofenac and Ansaid form the main non-steroidal anti-inflammatory group in this range, most often used for joint pain such as Osteoarthritis. Prednisolone and Arava sit here for a related reason: one is an oral corticosteroid and the other a disease-modifying medicine, and both calm inflammation rather than act as direct painkillers.

Muscle relaxants, migraine medicines and topical anaesthetics

Flexeril, Robaxin, Lioresal, Baclosign and Tizacare all ease muscle spasm rather than joint or nerve pain, using several different muscle relaxant ingredients, including baclofen in Lioresal and Baclosign. Imitrex and Rizact treat migraine attacks specifically, a separate pain pattern from joint or muscle pain.

Prilox Cream and Xylocaine are applied to the skin to numb an area directly, using lidocaine or a lidocaine-prilocaine combination instead of an oral medicine. A handful of products, including Rhinocort, Pirfenex, Pletal and Periactin, are grouped into this collection because of a different condition, such as a breathing, circulation, nerve or allergy problem, rather than for pain relief itself.
