Key points

  • Progestogen-only pills contain no oestrogen, unlike every tablet in this range.
  • These tablets work mainly by stopping ovulation and do not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
  • The NHS notes some combined pills can also help with acne or premenstrual symptoms, alongside contraception.
  • In the UAE, the Emirates Drug Establishment lists Yaz as a drospirenone and ethinylestradiol combination.

Progestogen combinations in this range

Every tablet here pairs Ethinylestradiol with a different progestogen, and that progestogen is what tells the brands apart. Levlen combines it with levonorgestrel, and Yaz combines it with drospirenone. Diane 35 and Ginette-35 both pair ethinylestradiol with Cyproterone Acetate, while Ortho Tri-cyclen pairs it with norgestimate. Desogen and Mircette both pair ethinylestradiol with Desogestrel.

Yaz is also listed for premenstrual dysphoric disorder and Acne Vulgaris. Ortho Tri-cyclen and Desogen are also listed for acne. Diane 35 and Ginette-35 are listed for androgen-dependent acne and hirsutism instead.
