- Adalimumab, the biologic in Humira, is used for several immune-mediated inflammatory conditions.
- Azathioprine, the ingredient in Imuran, is an immunosuppressant used for autoimmune conditions and after organ transplantation.
- Blood tests are an important part of monitoring azathioprine treatment.
- Leflunomide and teriflunomide, the ingredients in Arava and Aubagio, are pyrimidine synthesis inhibitors.
Biologics, immunosuppressants and DMARDs in this range
Humira is a biologic that comes as an auto-injector, listed for rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and plaque psoriasis.
Prograf tablets, Cellcept and ciclosporin capsules add tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetil and ciclosporin; these immunosuppressants are listed for organ transplant rejection, and ciclosporin is also listed for psoriasis. Azathioprine (Imuran) is the fourth immunosuppressant in the range, supplied as a tablet rather than a capsule.
Leflunomide (Arava) is listed for rheumatoid arthritis, while teriflunomide (Aubagio) is listed for relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis, including clinically isolated syndrome. Orapred, a prednisolone tablet, is also listed for rheumatoid arthritis, asthma and allergic reactions.
