Key points
- NICE’s epilepsy guidance aims to improve diagnosis and treatment for different seizure types and epilepsy syndromes.
- NICE restricts topiramate and valproate-based medicines, such as Topamax and Depakote, in women and girls of childbearing potential, because of pregnancy-related risk.
- NICE’s headache guidance separates migraine from tension-type and cluster headache, and covers medication overuse headache, caused by taking headache medicines too often.
Medicines for epilepsy and seizures
Dilantin, Mysoline, Keppra, Lamictal and Depakote treat seizure disorders. Lamictal contains lamotrigine and Depakote contains divalproex; both also treat bipolar disorder, and Depakote adds migraine prevention. Neurontin and Lyrica, which contains pregabalin, also treat nerve pain: postherpetic neuralgia for Neurontin, and neuropathic pain and fibromyalgia for Lyrica. Topamax contains topiramate for both seizures and migraine prevention.
Medicines for migraine and Parkinson’s disease
Zomig, Relpax and Maxalt are triptans for an ongoing migraine attack, and Inderal contains propranolol for migraine prevention alongside its heart and blood pressure uses. For Parkinson’s disease, Sinemet combines carbidopa with levodopa, Stalevo adds entacapone to that combination, and Azilect, Artane, Eldepryl, Requip and Mirapex are further medicines; Requip and Mirapex also treat restless legs syndrome.
Medicines for dementia and cognitive decline
Aricept, Namenda, Donamem and Galantamine Tablets treat Alzheimer’s disease or dementia; Donamem combines donepezil with memantine. Nootropil, Cerecetam and Vinpocetine Tablets treat cognitive impairment rather than a named dementia diagnosis.
Medicines for balance and vertigo
Betahistine Tablets treat Meniere’s disease and vertigo. Sibelium contains flunarizine for migraine prevention and vestibular vertigo, and Stugeron contains cinnarizine for motion sickness.
Three further conditions covered here
Aubagio contains teriflunomide for relapsing multiple sclerosis. Norwayz contains idebenone for Leber’s hereditary optic neuropathy, a rare inherited condition affecting vision. Compazine contains prochlorperazine for nausea and vomiting, schizophrenia and non-psychotic anxiety.
