Heart & Blood Pressure
Raised blood pressure, heart failure, angina, abnormal heart rhythm, fluid retention and pulmonary hypertension each have their own medicines, and many people need more than one problem addressed together. Which ones someone takes depends on which combination of problems they have.

Key points
- NICE’s Hypertension in adults: diagnosis and management guideline covers diagnosing hypertension, measuring blood pressure, assessing cardiovascular risk, and starting antihypertensive treatment in stages.
- NICE’s Recommendations | Chronic heart failure in adults: diagnosis and management guideline lists a diuretic, an ACE inhibitor or ARB, a beta blocker and a mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist among heart failure medicines.
Medicines for high blood pressure
Brands here include ACE inhibitors such as Vasotec (enalapril), ARBs such as Cozaar (losartan), calcium-channel blockers such as Norvasc (amlodipine), beta blockers such as Tenormin (atenolol), and diuretics such as Lasix (furosemide). Combination tablets such as Exforge, Hyzaar and Zestoretic join two or three of these ingredient types into one tablet.
Medicines for heart failure, fluid retention and angina
Entresto contains sacubitril with valsartan, and Coreg (carvedilol), Aldactone (spironolactone) and Inspra (eplerenone) also treat heart failure, while torsemide and other diuretics manage related fluid retention. For angina, Imdur (isosorbide mononitrate), Ranexa (ranolazine) and Procoralan (ivabradine) each ease exertional chest pain differently.
Why Gutron and Letairis do not lower blood pressure like the rest
Most medicines above bring blood pressure down, but Gutron contains midodrine and treats low blood pressure on standing instead. Letairis (ambrisentan) and Endobloc T Kit treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, confined to the lungs rather than the wider circulation. Cordarone (amiodarone), Lanoxin (digoxin) and diltiazem-based tablets treat abnormal heart rhythms such as atrial fibrillation instead of blood pressure.
Nexletol also appears alongside these. It contains bempedoic acid and is used for high cholesterol rather than blood pressure, heart failure or rhythm problems.
