Key points

  • Serious cardiovascular and stomach risks: etodolac can raise the risk of blood clots, heart attack, stroke, bleeding, ulcers and perforation of the stomach or intestines.
  • CABG surgery: etodolac must not be used around coronary artery bypass graft surgery.
  • Warfarin testing: studies found no significant change in warfarin’s effect on prothrombin time when etodolac was added.

How etodolac works

Etodolac reduces the formation of prostaglandins, chemicals involved in inflammation and pain. Laboratory studies show greater selectivity for COX-2, an enzyme linked with inflammation, than COX-1. This effect differs from other NSAIDs. Etopan XL is a prolonged-release etodolac tablet named in the supporting medicine information.
