Key points
- Acid suppression lasts for more than 24 hours, although lansoprazole clears from the blood in under two hours.
- Liver processing involves the CYP3A and CYP2C19 enzymes.
- Long-term PPI use may be associated with bone fractures, vitamin B12 malabsorption and low magnesium levels.
What lansoprazole is used for
Lansoprazole is used to heal and relieve symptoms of an active Duodenal Ulcer. With amoxicillin and clarithromycin, it is used as triple therapy to eradicate Helicobacter pylori linked to duodenal ulcer disease. As a proton pump inhibitor, it switches off the final stage of stomach acid production.
