Patient summary
Rivaroxaban tablets for acute coronary syndrome and coronary artery disease. This anticoagulant reduces the risk of blood clots.
Mechanism of action
Xarelto contains rivaroxaban, a medicine known as a direct oral anticoagulant. It works by blocking a substance in the blood called factor Xa, which is essential for blood clotting. By reducing factor Xa activity, Xarelto helps prevent harmful blood clots from forming in veins and arteries and treats existing clots. It is used to prevent stroke in people with irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation), to treat and prevent deep vein clots and lung clots, and to prevent clots after hip or knee replacement surgery.
Drug interactions
other anticoagulants; NSAIDs; acetylsalicylic acid; antiplatelet agents; CYP3A4 and P-gp inhibitors; selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors; serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors
Age restrictions
Not recommended for children aged less than 18 years except for treatment of VTE and prevention of VTE recurrence in children weighing from 30 kg.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Pregnancy: Contraindicated during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown reproductive toxicity. Women of childbearing potential should avoid becoming pregnant during treatment. Breastfeeding: Confirm breastfeeding suitability with a qualified clinician or pharmacist before use.
