Patient summary
Flurbiprofen tablets for rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. It is also available as a topical gel for localised joint pain.
Mechanism of action
Ansaid contains flurbiprofen, which belongs to a group of medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. It works by inhibiting enzymes called cyclooxygenases, thereby reducing the production of prostaglandins that cause inflammation, pain, and fever in the body. By lowering prostaglandin levels, it helps relieve pain and reduce swelling and stiffness in affected joints and tissues.
Drug interactions
aspirin; other NSAIDs; cyclooxygenase-2 selective inhibitors; corticosteroids; anticoagulants; antiplatelet agents; selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors; ciclosporin; tacrolimus; methotrexate; lithium; diuretics; ACE inhibitors; angiotensin II receptor antagonists; mifepristone; quinolone antibiotics; zidovudine; cardiac glycosides
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Pregnancy: Flurbiprofen should be avoided during the first and second trimesters of pregnancy unless clearly necessary; if used, the dose should be kept as low and duration as short as possible. Flurbiprofen is contraindicated during the third trimester of pregnancy due to risk of premature closure of the ductus arteriosus, renal dysfunction, prolonged bleeding time, and inhibition of uterine contractions. Use during labour and delivery is not recommended. Breastfeeding: Not recommended as flurbiprofen passes into breast milk in small amounts.
