Patient summary
Ibrutinib capsules for mantle cell lymphoma and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia. A targeted cancer medicine that blocks a specific protein driving the cancer.
Mechanism of action
Ibrutinib is a targeted cancer medicine that works by blocking a specific protein called Bruton's tyrosine kinase, or BTK. BTK sends signals that tell certain white blood cells called B-cells to grow and divide uncontrollably in cancers like mantle cell lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, and Waldenström's macroglobulinaemia. By blocking BTK, ibrutinib helps stop the cancer cells from growing and dividing, causing them to die. The medicine is taken by mouth in capsule or tablet form.
